Railton Pub

Owner Robbie is a lovely bloke. He has camping out back and a 5 dollar for 5 minute hot shower. Beautiful old building.

Incredibly fast flowing river full of snags. If you fell in it would be curtains.

Yolla Tavern

Beautiful Old Building.

Ulverstone River Oysters

The boat ramp has quite a tide and at ebb the flats expose tiny oysters. When the sun is shining the water sparks.

These chaps sat with the motor in the drink and spinning away under the starter for minutes. Never fired once.  "She hasn't been started in a long time". I went back half an hour later, the trailer was parked and the boat nowhere to be seen.

Diesel Heater on the blink - again.

Symptoms:  blows smokey unignited fuel vapour out of the exhaust. Last time this happened I disconnected the fuel and ran it thorough a cuppla start cycles to lean it right out. That was about 4 tanks of 24 liters of fuel ago. It worked.

My initial diagnosis was that I had been running it on a low setting. I thought maybe it was running too cool and not de coking the combustion chamber.  I have never run it one any setting but 100 percent since the last failure.

Best fix ? Move North of the Tropic of Capricorn.

Problem solved. The connector that takes the start up current is not up to the job. Inadequate current gets to the glow plug to start combustion but a credible voltage drop still exists.

Fix:  involved breaking out the conductors to a more robust connector lug / bus style system.

Cooee Point

About 3 ks from the CBD. Penguins squall adorably most of the night and shearwaters perch on the beautiful sedimentary shore.

I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me but the decks on barge closest, is actually underwater.

This hilltop overlooks the Perfume River. The birds were singing and the butterflies were flitting between the trees. Such tranquility, it is hard to credit the brutal history of the place. If it were me with a Kalashnikov or an M - 16 i would have just put it down and had a snooze. What was the point of it all?

Before I met with Old Mate and his family I wanted to go on a bit of a tour of Vietnam to get used to the vibe. I chose a trip with G Adventures who were just amazing. The tour guide was top notch. I told him I was a Tour Guide myself and I would be asking a lot of questions so he deserved to know why.

At the end of the tour I absolutely blitzed his customer feedback form with ticks. I gave him a very generous tip. There was nothing i could suggest he could do to improve his performance. He took on incredible tasks. He would often let us all just wander off to do our own thing. I would be terrified to do that. He did it and monitored us all as individuals. He was an education. A totally class act.

A note on tipping. Supposedly tipping is not necessary in Vietnam. I beg to differ. It is polite to give money in a card as a gift to begin a interaction then do the same afterward to say "thank you". Never look at the money until you are alone. Never wait for the shopkeep to make change.

The Most Hated Bird on the Planet

The masked lapwing (Vanellus miles), also known as the masked plover and often called the spur-winged plover or just plover.

At the outset I didn't consider pouring my venom on this particular individual, more the species as a whole, but now I am not so sure.

X - Y Scanning CRT clock

This project is very  cool bit I reckon it would be nicer as an Atari style X - Y rendered image.

A CRT is an inherently analogue device and the raster scan scheme was an inherently analogue technique based on two sawtooth waveform generators.

The 80s machine code methodology was very cool but required a certain special type of autism to author. I did a bit of PDPII machine code once. Rather than sperg right out I am wondering if simply deciding the X - Y fields into a single table and asining each of the characters in thier respective positions a set of consecutive coordinates corresponding to the vertices of the characters.

Back up the line what be required is to generate a sequence of ordered pairs.

Bandwidth might be an issue but that then becomes a hardware problem. The image programming could be done in a fairly human friendly workspace.

Two 10? Bit ADC for X Y and a Z drive hooked up to a standard electrostatic CRT would be the display. Big would be better but the downside is the higher drive voltages.

The number rose would be a static lookup table. The hands would be generated using a sin function who input is fed by a timer.

The whole project would be extremely cool but ultimately space and time consuming and would probably culminate in something rather over wrought and appallingly baroque and steam punk.

Likely the "fake and gayness" would out way the coolness because it would be plain how much work went into the stupid thing. Now if you could pick up a vintage Oscilloscope that would change the whole outlook. You would just need an Arduino and a cuppla ADCs . Plus you could use the Oscilloscope as and Oscilloscope. Now THAT would be cool!!

Vale Mum

I was warned when I first took on ownership of a Mother™ that they were fraught with all sorts of issues. In constant need of maintenance, both of them and thier consequent infrastucture. In short there is so much to go wrong with them pity help the unfortunate owner of such an appliance.

Truth  be told I got relatively trouble free service from this unit for nigh on 60 years. Your mileage may vary however.

It all stopped happening for Mum  27 August 2019. I dont want to speculate on the medical side of things but am wanting some answers as to why or even if her drip was set up so as not to provide hydration. Non medical people in the grip of deep grief, beware of second guessing the professionals. That said nothing they could have done or not would make her any less dead now. Dieing will never be a pleasant experience - price you pay for the joy of living.

Love you so much Mum....

It was so much fun !!

Böltonwagen Tour - Feb

Going from the stationary cluttered building site to the more mobile, more comfortable and far more aesthetically uplifting. Plenty of construction and invention yet to be undertaken but this will be more in the nature of embellishment than survival.

Every library has a shelf of books to be sold off for a cuppla bucks. Making up a collage is fun and the results quite pleasant. I find Aquadhere applied neat on the back. Sand the spikes of wood off the ply wall then dampen with a sponge. Stick the cutout in place then smear a  coat of Aquadhere over the outside surface and squeegee with a wet sponge to change out blobs and bubbles. Less glue will leave a friable paper that peels away from the wall.

R/C Simulators.

Just as whacking a tennis ball isn't supposed to be tennis - it is well worthwhile as a short interlude for relaxation and to help wire up one's reflexes for more articulate brain / hand coordination.

# 1 Multiflight - good graphics and pleasant to operate. Windows.

#2 PicaSim - Medium Graphics and has a variety of senarios. Windows.

#3 CRRCSim - crude graphics and GUI. Quite pleasant to use. Linux.

All of them require a bit of fiddling to setup. This is part of the familiarization process and becomes less frustrating every time.
